Rugby is one of the traditional sports for boys at York. We are very competitive in our league and enjoy a reputation for playing hard but clean. In spite of not being in the super league we regularly have players selected for the various representative provincial sides. A good number of our past-pupils have gone on to play for senior sides after school. Our philosophy could be summarised this way: Winning – it isn’t important, what matters is how you play the game. Losing – it isn’t important, what matters is how you play the game. Playing the game – play to win. In keeping with our philosophy we do not “buy” players rather nurturing our local talent. Boys are encouraged to qualify as referees and coaches and earn the coveted IRB qualifications. For us rugby is more than just a game. We see it as character building and insist on the players setting an example of behaviour on and off the field and in the classroom as well. As individuals that are looked up to by especially the juniors the players are expected to provide active and positive leadership.
For the last 8 years Blikkies Groenewald has assisted York High coaches with the latest trends and coaching techniques in the rugby world. The clinic triggers the needed enthusiasm with coaches and students as the season starts. This year has been no exception.
The objectives of the 3 day clinic included the following :
- How to coach skills
- Structure – Attack, Defence
- Patterns – Starter moves
Many thanks to Mr Herbst for organising the clinic and to the following sponsors:
