Dr. Matthew van der Merwe

Matriculated 2015

As a former student of York High School, my post-matriculation journey has been a blend of hard work, determination, and a continuous pursuit of knowledge. After matriculating from York in 2015, I commenced my studies University of Cape Town, where I pursued my MBChB degree. My time there was marked by continued hard work and dedication leading to my graduation with honours (cum laude) in 2021.

The early years of my professional career were both challenging and enriching. I gained invaluable experience rotating through different medical departments at George Provincial Hospital as a medical intern and I am currently working as a community service medical officer at Khayelitsha District Hospital in the emergency medicine and internal medicine departments. These experiences have been eye-opening and enriching, and have allowed immense personal growth within the realm of the human experience.

A pivotal moment in my career was being selected as a national finalist for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford in 2023. This honour not only acknowledged my academic and leadership abilities but also propelled me toward my ultimate goal of becoming a leading clinical scientist in the field of internal medicine.

My research interests are within general internal medicine, nephrology, and the critical issues of HIV and tuberculosis (TB) and its interplay with public health. My current and active involvement in various medical research projects is a testament to my commitment to advancing medical knowledge and practices.

Looking ahead, I am excited to further my studies by pursuing a Master’s degree in Tropical Medicine and International Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) in 2025, and ultimately specialising in internal medicine.

My path from the blue hallways of York High School to the corridors of hospitals and research institutions is a testament to the foundation laid during my formative years. The unwavering support, excellent education, and the values instilled in me by York High School have been the bedrock of my journey. I am profoundly grateful for the mentors and teachers who believed in me. They have all played an integral role in shaping the clinician and scientist I am today. My story is not just one of personal achievement, but also a tribute to the community at York High School that champions the pursuit of excellence and service to humanity.”

Marecia Damons

Marecia Damons is an award-winning journalist at GroundUp News. She won the 2023 Nat Nakasa Award for Media Integrity for her work on the Thabo Bester prison escape story.

In October 2022, Marecia began investigating the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester at Mangaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein. Bester was believed to have died after a fire broke out in his prison cell in May 2022. His death was initially ruled as a suicide.

Her investigation provided compelling evidence that the body found in the prison cell was not that of Bester, contradicting the official denials from the Department of Correctional Services and G4S, the private security company running the prison. Alongside her colleague Daniel Steyn, Marecia’s reporting exposed corruption at Mangaung prison and forced authorities to lodge an investigation into Bester’s supposed death.

It was later revealed that Bester had, in fact, escaped from prison and fled to Tanzania with his girlfriend Nandipha Magudumana. Several people have been arrested so far, including prison officials, and the matter is being heard in court.

Marecia has always had a passion for writing since contributing to her primary school’s ‘In Touch’ magazine. Originally from George, she now lives in Cape Town. She holds both an Honours Degree in Journalism and a Bachelor’s Degree in Language and Culture from Stellenbosch University.

SUCCESS STORIES

Steve Joubert

Steve Joubert graduated from York High in 1996. Following his schooling, he embarked on an overseas journey, taking up a position at Harrod’s in London within the retail sales division. After a span of several years abroad, he returned to George in the year 2000. Back home, he became an integral part of his father’s entrepreneurial endeavor—a modest tile establishment named Stiles. Starting from the bottom, under his father’s guidance, Steve gradually ascended the organizational ladder, working diligently side by side with him.

Fueling his enthusiasm for the enterprise, Steve’s dedication knew no bounds. Eventually, the mantle of leadership was entrusted to him, and he assumed the role of managing the business autonomously. Over time, Stiles underwent a remarkable transformation. What once began as a diminutive tile shop situated in George burgeoned into a prominent national entity, boasting 11 expansive showrooms sprawled across the country.
